Syngenta Nigeria Limited introduces five new products

Syngenta Nigeria Limited on Tuesday September 15 introduced five new products into the market. The products are  Ambligo, a fast acting pesticide against many crop insects,  Chibli and Kilele tomato hybrids and  two new local rice seed varieties.

At the event held in Abuja the company said Ambligo has the capacity of drastically reducing and eliminating losses due to insect infestation, especially ‘tuta absoluta’  ravages, on tomatoes in the Northern part of the country which results in loss of investments worth hundreds of millions of Naira annually. The company said that Ambligo could give farmers up to 21 days protection from insects.

Speaking for the company, Mr. Shachi Sharma, said the company is collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on ways of boosting agricultural production in the country. “We are also working with the seed council, quarantine services, research institutes, root research crop institute, Institute for Agricultural Research, and other research institutes,” he said.

Syngenta Nigeria Limited is an associate company of Syngenta AG, a world leading Agribusiness Company headquartered in Basel, Switzerland. Formed by the merger of Novartis Agribusiness and AstraZeneca Crop Protection, focuses on Seeds and Crop Protection.

In Nigeria, Syngenta Nigeria Limited is also one of the leading Crop Protection Companies. Syngenta Nigeria Limited started business in Nigeria in 1964 as Ciba and became Ciba-Geigy Nigeria Limited in 1971 as a result of the merger of Ciba Limited and J.R.Geigy Limited. In 1974, as a result of the indigenisation decree, it changed its name to Swiss Nigerian Chemical Company Limited. Again, in 1997, as a result of the merger of Ciba-Geigy AG and Sandoz AG, it became Novartis Nigeria Limited. And with effect from February 1, 2001, the company changed name once more to Syngenta Nigeria Limited.

  • These two cocoa products have varnished from Nigeria market: RIDOMIL (fungicide) and Basudin 600EC (insecticide). Suffice to refer to the successful field experiments and introduction of the above products during the 5 year programme at Idanre, Ondo state – FARMER SUPPORT TEAM (towards the end of last millennium). Apart from several million of Dollars the programme gulped, the two products have gained recognition and acceptance by the cocoa farmers in the project state and suburb states. Part of the success stories was the disintegration from Lindane usage to Diazinon because of the residual effect of lindane on cocoa beans . Presently, Ridomil has to be smuggled to Nigeria from Ghana; while Basudin and Diazol manufactured by Dizengolf were totally out of market.
SUGGESTION: Bring these two products back to Nigeria please.
