Apply for the Rice Business Plan Competition for Student Startups ($2M prizes)

The Rice Business Plan Competition 2023 for Student Startups is now accepting applications. The competition, which is in its 22nd year, provides collegiate entrepreneurs with practical business experience so they may present their ideas, improve their business plans, and discover what it takes to found a successful firm.

The Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship, Rice University’s well acclaimed project devoted to the development of entrepreneurship, and Rice Business are hosting and organizing the event. From nine teams fighting for $10,000 in prizes in 2001 to 42 teams from around the world competing for more than $2 million in cash and prizes in the last 20 years.

Competitive Markets

Agriculture/Agtech, Batteries & Storage, Decarbonization/Climate Tech, Energy Infrastructure, Oil & Gas Technologies, Renewable/Alternative Energy, Recycling, New and Non-Carbon Fuels, Transportation/Electric Vehicles, Water, are just a few examples of the many technologies related to energy, clean technology, and sustainability.

Advanced manufacturing, advanced materials, aerospace and space technology, augmented and virtual reality, autonomous vehicles, drones, machine learning and artificial intelligence, quantum computing, robotics, and smart sensors are all examples of hard technology.

Aging/Gerontology, Biotech, Diagnostics, Digital Health, Disease Management, Public Health, Medical Devices, Personalized Medicine, Pharma & Therapeutics, and Prevention are just a few examples of the life sciences and healthcare solutions available today.

The teams at the 2022 Rice Business Plan Competition received a total of more than $2 Million in investment and cash rewards.
Over the course of the multi-day event, they give student company founders a challenging, instructive opportunity to pitch investors, get feedback, and progress their startup. Additionally, a significant amount of time is set aside for interactions with the prize sponsors and judges, the bulk of whom are members of the investment industry.
The mentorship component of the RBPC is among its most crucial elements. Startups that are selected for the competition get the chance to work with experts prior to, during, and after the competition. The mentoring program supports founders in strengthening, improving, and equipping their businesses to raise money and succeed in the entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Eligibility Requirements

When your startup first becomes eligible for RBPC 2023, it must:

is from a college or university anywhere in the world, is student-driven, student-created, and/or student-managed; has at least two current student founders or management team members, and at least one of those students is a current graduate degree-seeking student; hasn’t raised more than $250,000 in equity capital before July 1, 2022; hasn’t generated more than $100,000 in revenue in any 12-month period before July 1, 2022; and is looking for funding.
