Equinix To Set Up A New $22 Million Data Center in Lagos
Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX) (www.Equinix.com), the world’s leading digital infrastructure company™, has announced plans to open its latest LG3 high-performance data center in Lagos, Nigeria. The $22 million investment marks the first phase of a broader $100 million expansion initiative designed to reshape Africa’s digital ecosystem over the next two years. Scheduled to launch in Q1 2026, the new facility will serve as a major step in advancing Nigeria’s digital economy, enabling local enterprises to scale efficiently while attracting global businesses to one of Africa’s fastest-growing technology hubs.
The LG3 data center will integrate Equinix Fabric, the company’s flagship interconnection service, into the Lagos metro area. This integration will allow organizations to seamlessly and securely connect their physical and digital infrastructures to leading cloud service providers, partners, and other enterprises across Equinix’s global network of over 270 data centers. The platform will give Nigerian companies unprecedented access to global markets while ensuring international firms can easily establish a local footprint in West Africa.
Commenting on the development, Wole Abu, Managing Director for West Africa at Equinix, said, “LG3 represents a defining moment in our long-term commitment to bridging Africa’s digital divide. As Lagos continues to rise as a center for innovation, talent, and global connectivity, this facility will accelerate access to transformative technologies such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and data analytics. We are not just building data centers—we are building the foundations for Africa’s next digital era, fostering innovation, and enabling economic empowerment across the continent.”
Olawale Owoeye, Managing Director at Cedarview, added, “Equinix’s new Lagos data center provides the resilient and scalable platform our customers need to expand their digital capabilities. Its reliability and global connectivity give us the confidence to deliver high-performance solutions and stay at the forefront of Africa’s growing digital economy. LG3 is a vital step toward ensuring that businesses operating in Nigeria and across the continent can remain competitive in the global market.”
Nigeria, the second-largest economy in Sub-Saharan Africa, continues to position itself as a key driver of digital innovation. Lagos, the country’s commercial capital, has been recognized as the only African city included in the Global Top 100 Startup Ecosystems, making it an ideal location for Equinix’s latest expansion.
Aslıhan Güreşcier, Vice President, EMEA Growth & Emerging Markets at Equinix, highlighted the broader potential of this investment: “Africa’s digital transformation is gathering momentum, powered by a young, tech-savvy population, expanding internet access, and a growing need for secure and scalable digital infrastructure. With the opening of our Lagos data center, Equinix is proud to contribute to this evolution—supporting industries from finance and education to healthcare and commerce with reliable, world-class facilities.”
Since entering the African market in 2022, Equinix has established a strong presence across the continent, including in Nigeria, Ghana, and Côte d’Ivoire, and most recently launched its first South African data center in Johannesburg. These strategic investments are accelerating Africa’s digital transformation by delivering sustainable, carrier-neutral infrastructure that connects the continent seamlessly to the global economy.
With its global reach spanning over 270 interconnected data centers, Equinix continues to leverage its international expertise to unlock Africa’s connectivity potential. Nigeria’s strategic coastal location makes it a critical hub for global subsea cable systems, linking the continent to Europe, Asia, and beyond.
Equinix remains deeply committed to sustainability and responsible operations. The company prioritizes environmentally conscious investment across all its facilities—including LG3—by focusing on energy efficiency, renewable energy integration, and minimizing carbon impact. Through these initiatives, Equinix aims not only to power Africa’s digital growth but to do so in a way that is sustainable and future-ready.
