Online training opportunity for African journalists – Thomson Reuters Reporting on illicit finance

The Thomson Reuters Foundation is looking for fluent English-speaking journalists based anywhere in Africa to take part in an intensive online training initiative that will develop their ability to report on illicit finance in Africa. 

The training, covering illicit financial flows, reporting on companies, accounts and budgets, and investigative techniques, will take place online between Monday, 25 October – Friday, 12 November 2021. Selected participants from the training will later be invited to take part in a mentoring support scheme and receive a story grant worth up to 700 USD to help them to produce stories on illicit finance. 

Who we are looking for journalists with:  

  • at least two years of professional experience, who work for one or more African media organisations  
  • access to minimum internet speed of 1 MB/second 
  • fluent English 
  • availability to attend three weeks of online training. The training schedule follows the format outlined below: 
    • During week 1: participants will be required to do some self-study, including reading and exercises and attend a live Meet and Greet video call with the cohort. 
    • During weeks 2 and 3: participants should be able to commit to 4 hours of live video sessions per day with trainers and/or expert speakers to ask questions, share ideas, learn new skills and apply them. In addition, participants should allow for a few hours per week of offline reading or assignments done on their own schedule.
