Africa CDC Confirms The Outbreak of Marburg Virus Disease

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has noted the official verification by Ethiopia’s Federal Ministry of Health and the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) of a Marburg virus disease (MVD) outbreak in Jinka, located in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region.

As of November 14, 2025, the National Reference Laboratory has definitively identified MVD cases. Ongoing field epidemiology and lab tests are in progress, revealing that the virus variant closely resembles strains previously documented in East Africa. Africa CDC received the first notification of a potential viral hemorrhagic fever on November 12, 2025.

National health authorities, EPHI, and local officials have promptly initiated countermeasures, such as intensified monitoring, on-site probes, upgraded infection control protocols, and public outreach initiatives. Africa CDC applauds this rapid and open response, which has facilitated quick detection and initial containment steps.

Africa CDC has long collaborated with EPHI to bolster Ethiopia’s advanced diagnostic and genomic monitoring infrastructure—vital tools activated immediately for this incident. Key contributions include supplying sequencing machines, necessary reagents, PCR testing kits (with Marburg-targeted options), and comprehensive staff instruction in areas like genomic analysis, data interpretation, biosafety measures, protective gear application, and secure specimen management.

EPHI’s primary genomics hub has been upgraded through joint efforts with Africa CDC and allies including the Global Fund, WHO, and the UK Health Security Agency, enabling swift lab results and bolstering the nation’s preparedness for emergencies.

The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI), a premier Ethiopian research body, has similarly benefited from Africa CDC’s investments in equipment, supplies, and specialized training, positioning it to lead key aspects of the Marburg response. This situation offers a valuable chance to enhance patient outcomes in impacted areas while advancing breakthroughs in Marburg countermeasures, testing, and therapies.

For improved synergy, Africa CDC and the Ministry of Health plan to align Marburg containment with current mpox vigilance and tracking activities. This integrated strategy aims to streamline assets, speed up identification, and minimize chances of cross-border transmission.

H.E. Dr. Jean Kaseya, Director-General of Africa CDC, is scheduled to confer with Ethiopia’s Health Minister to evaluate further assistance requirements and fortify preparedness along shared borders. Africa CDC remains committed to partnering closely with Ethiopian officials and international supporters for a swift, unified, and impactful intervention. Additional details will be shared as developments unfold.
