Cooking Gas Prices Surge by 37.98% Year-on-Year in 2025

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in its July 2025 Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Price Watch provided new insights into the average retail cooking gas prices across Nigeria. According to the report, the average price for refilling a 5kg LPG cylinder rose by 37.98% year-on-year—from ₦5,974.55 in July 2024 to ₦8,243.79 in July 2025. However, on a month-to-month basis, there was a slight decrease of 0.96% compared to June 2025. Similarly, the cost of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder climbed by 44.51% over the year but declined marginally by 1.91% month-on-month.

A breakdown of prices by state revealed significant variations. Adamawa State recorded the highest average refill prices for both the 5kg and 12.5kg cylinders, followed by Rivers and Taraba States. In contrast, Yobe had the lowest average refill price, with Niger and Nasarawa trailing closely behind. These differences highlight persistent regional disparities in LPG affordability across the country.

The sustained annual increase in cooking gas prices underscores the mounting cost-of-living challenges faced by Nigerian households, particularly regarding access to affordable energy. Although the minor monthly dips suggest temporary market corrections, the broader upward trend points to deeper structural issues within the supply chain, distribution network, and overall market accessibility. To reduce the pressure on households, the government should focus on enhancing domestic LPG production, improving logistics and storage infrastructure, and encouraging private investment in the sector. Additional steps such as targeted support for low-income families and the promotion of affordable clean energy alternatives would further help alleviate energy-related financial burdens.
