DBN Launch web based Data Asset platform to aid the growth of MSMEs

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are the fulcrum upon which the Nigerian economy rests, accounting for over 90% of enterprises and contributing significantly to jobs and GDP. Yet, one of the biggest challenges facing these businesses is constrained access to credit due to inadequate data, poor accounting, and invisibility. To counter this, the Development Bank of Nigeria (DBN) has just rolled out an innovative MSME Data Asset, a breakthrough platform that will improve business development and expand access to funding.

What is the MSME Data Asset?

The MSME Data Asset is an online centralized database capturing, organizing, and verifying valuable business information on Nigeria’s MSMEs. By aggregating verifiable data such as financial statements, credit history, business performance, and sectoral trends, the platform provides funders, banks, and investors with insights to make informed lending and investment decisions. For MSMEs, this initiative means more visibility, better credibility, and easier access to financial products previously out of reach.

Why The MSME Data Asset Matters

One of the greatest inhibiting bottlenecks preventing MSMEs from securing credit is the lack of formalized, verifiable information. Banks view small enterprises as risky due to informal management and inadequate documentation. With the new MSME Data Asset, DBN is defeating this obstacle by offering an open system whereby entrepreneurs are able to bring out their growth potential, and financial institutions are able to extend credit with assurance.

This project also aligns with Nigeria’s broader economic diversification plan since more resilient MSMEs translate to higher productivity, jobs, and inclusive growth.

Benefits to MSMEs and Investors

  • The MSME Data Asset brings the following benefits:
  • Greater Access to Finance – By providing credible business information, MSMEs become more attractive to banks and investors.
  • Greater Business Expansion – With access to credit, small businesses can expand operations, adopt new technology, and improve competitiveness.
  • Data-Driven Policy Making – There is availability of authentic MSME data for planning, regulation, and intervention for the government and policymakers.
  • Investor Confidence – Compliance data alleviates perceptions of risk and prompts increased private sector investment into the MSME sector.

DBN’s Commitment to MSMEs

Since its inception, the Development Bank of Nigeria has focused on empowering small enterprises through technical assistance, capacity development, and access to financing. Through the MSME Data Asset, DBN is solidifying its role as a force for sustainable economic growth. Besides securing the financial ecosystem, the platform also builds confidence between MSMEs and lenders.

The launch of the MSME Data Asset by the Development Bank of Nigeria is a breakthrough moment in Nigeria’s entrepreneurial journey. By freeing up access to finance and providing an open data-driven ecosystem, DBN is empowering MSMEs to grow, expand, and compete globally. This is not a database—it is an open door to opportunity, innovation, and prosperity for Nigerian businesses.
