NiRA implements new feature to enhance the privacy and security of .ng domains
The Nigeria Internet Registration Association, NiRA, has implemented a new feature designed to enhance privacy and security for all .ng domain holders. This new feature is the WHOIS Privacy Redaction across the .ng domain space.
The consequences of this new privacy and security feature for you include that personal details linked to your .ng domain registrations, including your name, address, phone number, and email, will no longer be accessible to the public in the WHOIS database. These specifics will instead be substituted with the designation “Data Redacted.”
The implications for you include Improved privacy and safeguarding against spam, unwanted communication, and identity theft; Ongoing visibility of crucial technical information (such as nameservers, domain status, and registration/expiration dates) to ensure the functionality of the internet; Compliance with international data protection standards.
NiRA serves as the Registry for the .ng Country Code Top Level Domain (ccTLD). The Association operates as a Not-for-Profit, Non-Governmental Self-Regulatory entity, established by the directive of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to oversee the management of Nigeria’s Country Code Top Level Domain, henceforth referred to as .ngTLD.
Established in 2005, NiRA maintains eleven .ng domain zones, namely: .ng, .com.ng, .org.ng, .net.ng, ,sch.ng, .gov.ng, .name.ng, .mobi.ng, .edu.ng, .mil.ng, and .i.ng. It has sold over 198,000 .ng domains and has a robust number of 100 accredited registrars or resellers of the .ng domains
