AMS-IX and MDXi launch Internet Exchange for Lagos

A new Internet Exchange has been established in Lagos, Nigeria, according to AMS-IX (https://www.AMS-IX.net/AMS), one of the biggest Internet exchange operators in the world, and MDXi (https://www.MDX-i.com/), a division of Equinix (https://www.Equinix.com/).

The carrier-neutral data center of MDXi, an Equinix Company, is where the new Internet Exchange, AMS-IX Lagos, is located. In accordance with the terms of the agreement, MDXi will represent AMS-IX commercially and act as the regional sales and marketing arm for AMS-IX Lagos. The technical and operational management of the exchange will be handled by AMS-IX.

By allowing regional and local ISPs, carriers, and Internet Exchanges to collect material from sizable international material Delivery Networks, hosting businesses, and application providers, AMS-IX Lagos hopes to become a significant content hub for West Africa. MDXi, an Equinix Company, and AMS-IX will concentrate on forming partnerships with regional telecom providers and IXs and assisting local ecosystems in the upcoming months.

AMS-IX As AMS-IX and MDXi, an Equinix Company, migrate and onboard the currently connected networks of West Africa Internet Exchange (WAF-IX), Lagos will start with more than 25 connected networks in the upcoming month. Large CDNs and application providers like Cloudflare, Microsoft, and Google are among the connected networks at WAF-IX.

According to AMS-IX CEO Peter van Burgel, “We plan to offer value to the local carriers and IX’s by luring even more content players to the area and assisting the neighborhood connection community. For us, this is a highly exciting project since we see it as a crucial first step toward making low-latency, reasonably priced Internet accessible throughout West Africa.

“This partnership enables MDXi to deliver value to the rich ecosystem of network operators, carriers, content providers, cloud services providers, and enterprises that we have present in the data center,” says Funke Opeke, Director of MDXi, an Equinix subsidiary. The AMS-IX relationship will assist MDXi in strengthening its position as a content hub for West and Central Africa, as well as francophone and anglophone West and Central Africa.
