OpenAI Launches Its AI-powered Browser ChatGPT Atlas Into the Market

OpenAI has officially launched ChatGPT Atlas browser, its long-awaited AI-powered web browser, marking a bold step into the competitive browser market dominated by Google Chrome. The new browser integrates OpenAI’s conversational technology directly into users’ web experiences, allowing them to search, summarize, and interact with content through ChatGPT.

The launch is part of OpenAI’s broader strategy to expand its ecosystem and engage its over 800 million weekly ChatGPT users in new ways. By embedding AI-driven assistance into browsing, Atlas could accelerate the shift from traditional keyword-based search to conversational, task-oriented web navigation — directly challenging Google’s long-held dominance in online search. Following the announcement, Alphabet (GOOGL.O) shares dipped 1.8% in afternoon trading, reflecting investor awareness of the growing competition.

In a live demo, OpenAI showcased Atlas’s capabilities by having ChatGPT locate an online recipe, navigate to Instacart, and automatically add the necessary ingredients to the shopping cart — demonstrating its “agent mode,” a feature available to paid users. This mode allows ChatGPT to perform tasks across sites, from research to shopping, without manual input.

ChatGPT Atlas is currently available globally on Apple’s (AAPL.O) macOS, with versions for Windows, iOS, and Android expected soon. The browser enters a fast-evolving field that already includes AI-driven alternatives like Perplexity’s Comet, Brave, and Opera Neon.

Since the release of ChatGPT in 2022, OpenAI — led by Sam Altman — has revolutionized the AI landscape but faces intensifying rivalry from Google and Anthropic. In response, Google has been enhancing its own browser experience, embedding its Gemini AI model into Chrome and rolling out “AI Mode,” which provides generative summaries alongside search results.

Despite these advancements, Google Chrome continues to dominate with a 71.9% global market share as of September, according to StatCounter. Still, analysts suggest OpenAI’s entry could reshape the competition, particularly in digital advertising. “Integrating chat into a browser is an early sign that OpenAI could start selling ads,” said Gil Luria, an analyst at D.A. Davidson. “If it does, it could take a meaningful portion of search advertising from Google, which controls about 90% of that market.”
