2022 World Cup: Argentina beats Australia 2-1: To face Netherlands in the Quarterfinals
With his first goal in the World Cup elimination round, Lionel Messi scored in his 1,000th professional match, helping Argentina advance over Australia and into the quarterfinals.
Messi gave Argentina the lead in the 34th minute with a flourish of his fabled left foot. It was his third goal of the competition and ninth goal overall at the World Cup, one more than Diego Maradona.
Argentina advanced to a quarterfinal matchup with the Netherlands thanks to a second goal from Julian Alvarez, who capitalized on a heavy touch by Australia goalkeeper Mat Ryan.
Craig Goodwin’s attempt from Australia was deflected into the goal by Argentina player Enzo Fernandez in the 77th minute to give the visitors a consolation victory.
