African Internet Governance Forum commences in Abuja on Tuesday
The 11th annual African Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF) will be held in Abuja, Nigeria, from September 19–21, 2023, with the focus on “Implementing the African Union’s Data Policy Framework for a Resilient and Inclusive Digital Future.”
The AfIGF’s main objective is to encourage African stakeholders’ participation in the global discussion on internet administration. It serves as the regional forum for multi-stakeholder dialogue on internet governance concerns in Africa.
In order to discuss and exchange ideas on important internet governance issues affecting Africa, the AfIGF will bring together representatives from governments, civil society, the commercial sector, academia, the technical community, and the media from all over the continent and beyond.
Topics including data protection and privacy, digital rights and inclusion, cybersecurity and trust, digital economy and innovation, digital transformation and governance, and regional and international cooperation will all be on the agenda of the AfIGF.
It immediately follows this year’s biennial African School on Internet Governance (AfriSIG), which took place in Abuja, Nigeria, from September 13 to September 18, 2023.
The African Union Commission (AUC), Research ICT Africa, the Association for Progressive Communications (APC), the United Nations Internet Governance Forum Parliamentary Track, and other stakeholders worked together to create AfriSIG.
The African Union’s Data Policy Framework was its main focus, and it brought together a number of parties. Digitalization, digital inclusion and inequality, human rights and the internet, and elements of the digital economy like trade, taxation, and sustainable development were among the major topics of attention.
The AfIGF and AfriSIG continue to be important initiatives for establishing Africa’s position on internet governance and laying out the course for a better future.
