AfriLabs is pleased to announce an invitation for Artificial Intelligence (AI) startups to apply for the Llama 3.1 Impact African Hackathon for AI Innovators, which is sponsored by Meta and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). This event presents an opportunity to secure funding of up to $100,000. The fully funded, in-person hackathon will be held in Kigali, Rwanda, from October 8-10, 2024. We are looking for AI developers, software engineers, technology enthusiasts, students in technical disciplines, professionals in gender studies, and startup founders from Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and Rwanda to join us.

    About the Hackathon – Apply for Llama 3.1 Impact African Hackathon for AI Innovators

    The primary aim of the hackathon is to promote AI innovation that tackles social impact challenges, including gender sensitivity, linguistic diversity, innovation and creativity, technical implementation, economic development and business opportunities, education and skills enhancement, and public services across Africa. Participants will work in interdisciplinary teams to create AI-driven solutions that address gender bias in digital content while promoting linguistic inclusivity and diversity through the use of Meta’s Llama AI technology.

Furthermore, you may obtain up to $500,000 in seed funding via the global track of the Llama Impact Grants to assist in launching your initiative.
    • Fostering Diversity: Promote innovation in artificial intelligence by tackling issues related to gender sensitivity and linguistic diversity across Africa.

    Eligibility Criteria – Apply for Llama 3.1 Impact African Hackathon for AI Innovators

    • Citizenship/Residency: Applicants are required to be citizens and residents of one of the four designated African nations: Nigeria, Rwanda, Kenya, or South Africa. In addition to citizenship, it is essential for participants to possess legal residency status in these countries to facilitate local involvement and a pertinent understanding of the context.
    • Age: Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
    • Background/Expertise: Candidates should include innovators, AI developers, entrepreneurs, and students who possess relevant experience in fields such as AI, technology, gender studies, or digital solutions.
    • Interest and Motivation: Applicants are required to provide documentation of prior AI-related projects.
    • Availability: Full participation is expected during the three-day hackathon event scheduled for October 8th to 10th, 2024, as well as any virtual activities or preparations leading up to the event.
    • Language Proficiency: A strong command of English is necessary, as it will be the primary language utilized throughout the hackathon.
    • Applicants must be residents of Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, or Rwanda.
