Cape Verde beats Mauritania 1:0 to advance to AFCON2023 Quarter-Finals
Cape Verde, the “surprise” tiny island Nation, today defeated Mauritius by a lone goal to advance to the quarter-finals of the AFCON2023 tournament. Cape Verde has successfully advanced to the Round of 16 for the second consecutive time in the AFCON competition. They are determined to proceed to the next phase with assurance as they face either the host nation, Ivory Coast, or the defending champions, Senegal.
Both teams put forth their best efforts to entertain the thousands of spectators at the stadium and the millions of viewers watching from home. Despite their efforts, neither team managed to score a goal in the first half. As the clock reached the 85th minute, it seemed that extra time was inevitable.
However, in a surprising turn of events, substitute Yassin El Welly casually headed the ball towards Gilson Benchimol in the 86th minute. In an attempt to salvage the situation, goalkeeper Babacar Niasse unintentionally conceded a penalty.
With great determination, Captain Ryan Mendes unleashed a powerful shot from the penalty spot, securing Cape Verde’s quarter-final ticket as the Blue Sharks emerged victorious with a 1-0 win.
