Former CBN Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, Restored as Emir of Kano
The executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, today restored the former CBN Governor who was deposed by his predecessor as the Emir of Kano. This followed the passage of a bill by the State House of Assembly repealing the extant laws by the past administration that gave way for the deposition of Sanusi Lamido and the subsequent creation of new emirates from the existing Kano emirate.
In the announcement made by the Governor before press men, the gave the existing Emir 48 hours to vacate his post and surrender all paraphernia of office within the next 48 hours.
The recent legislation supersedes the Kano State Emirates Council Law, 2019 and abolishes the emirate councils established by Governor Yusuf’s predecessor, Abdullahi Ganduje.
The aforementioned law was utilized by Ganduje to divide the Kano Emirate into five in December 2019 and remove the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, on March 9, 2020. The emirates formed by the Ganduje administration included Karaye, Bichi, Rano, and Gaya, in addition to Kano.
This decision sparked controversy at the time, and Governor Yusuf, in overturning it, stated that it was the reversal of a law “that fragmented the over 1,000-year-old Kano Emirate.”
