GE Vernova Commits to Sustainable Energy Transition in Nigeria
GE Vernova, a company dedicated to driving electrification and decarbonization, is committed to accelerating Nigeria’s sustainable energy transition. Through its various operating segments, including power, wind, and electrification, GE Vernova is actively involved in the generation, transmission, distribution, and storage of electricity. With a presence of over 100 years in Nigeria, the company plays a crucial role in supporting the country’s power supply, serving utilities, independent power plants, the oil & gas industry, and other sectors. Globally, GE Vernova contributes to approximately 30% of the world’s electricity generation.
Nigeria, being one of Africa’s economic powerhouses, faces a dynamic energy landscape characterized by a growing population, industrialization, and an increasing demand for electricity. Recognizing the importance of the energy industry in driving economic growth and improving the quality of life for its citizens, GE Vernova recently hosted the “Nigeria Energy Dialogue” event. This forum brought together government officials, financiers, utilities, and key stakeholders from the private sector to discuss and explore policy initiatives, technological advancements, and collaborations. The collective goal of this dialogue was to address challenges and create a sustainable energy ecosystem in Nigeria.
Kenneth Oyakhire, Managing Director, Services – SSA, for GE Vernova’s Gas Power, emphasized the company’s enduring partnership with Nigeria and its commitment to strengthening it further. He highlighted the importance of creating localized solutions that will support Nigeria’s power infrastructure. Through collaboration with the government and industry stakeholders, GE Vernova aims to ensure that power generation assets continue to contribute to a cleaner energy future while providing reliable, affordable, and sustainable power. Leveraging its extensive global experience, with an installed base of 2,200 gigawatts, GE Vernova is determined to make Nigeria’s energy transition a reality.
Julie LeBlanc, U.S. Mission Commercial Counselor, acknowledged the United States’ leadership in renewable energy. She highlighted the valuable contributions of American companies like GE Vernova, which bring substantial capital, innovation, and proven solutions while upholding the highest standards of transparency, quality, and social responsibility.
GE Vernova has a longstanding commitment to supporting Nigeria’s power sector development. Notable recent projects include the groundbreaking of the 1,350-megawatt Gwagwalada Independent Power Plant, which will be fueled by Nigerian natural gas and constructed in three phases using GE Vernova’s E-class gas turbines. Additionally, the company commissioned four 175 MW Francis hydropower turbines and generators for the Zungeru hydropower project, Nigeria’s second largest hydropower plant. Furthermore, GE Vernova provided three LM6000 PD aeroderivative gas turbines for the recently commissioned 141 MW Aba Integrated Power Project in Abia State, Nigeria, by the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, H. E. Kashim Shettima.
