Ghana crash out of AFCON2023 as Egypt and Cape Verde progress to round of 16
The Black of Ghana incredibly lost a two zero lead in their game with Mozambique to end the score line 2:2, effectively crashing out of the 2023 African Cup of Nations tournament. On the other hand, Cape Verde were held to a 2:2 draw by Egypt with the result helping Egypt progress to the round of 16 having secured three points from their three group matches and placing second on the group table.
Ghana’s Jordan Ayew wasted no time in breaking the deadlock, converting a penalty just 15 minutes into the match after Mozambique’s Infren Nanani fouled Joseph Paintsil in the box. Despite this early advantage for the Black Stars, the first half remained a closely contested affair. The Mambas came out strong in the second half, desperately seeking an equalizer. They came close to leveling the score within five minutes of the restart, with Bruno Langa attempting a shot from inside the box. However, Ghana’s goalkeeper Richard Ofori made a crucial save to deny him.
In the 67th minute, disaster struck for Mozambique as Reinildo Mandava handled Mohammed Kudus’ goal-bound shot inside the box, resulting in a second penalty for Ghana. Jordan Ayew stepped up once again and confidently converted the spot-kick, doubling his team’s lead. With only a few minutes remaining and Ghana seemingly on their way to victory, Andre Ayew unintentionally handled the ball inside the box, giving Mozambique a lifeline. Geny Catamo capitalized on the resulting penalty, pulling one back for his team in the 91st minute.
Just three minutes later, Reinildo redeemed himself for his earlier mistake by heading Shaquille Momad Nangy’s corner into the net, completing a dramatic turnaround for Chris Hughton’s side. Despite their efforts, Ghana’s exit from the tournament seems inevitable, as they currently have two points from three games and a negative goal difference. However, their final fate will depend on the results of other third-placed teams.
