Investigative Maintenance Test on Third Mainland Bridge Begins This Friday, to Last 4 Days
Lagos State Government has announced that Investigative Maintenance Test the Third Mainland Bridge will begin from midnight of August 23 to midnight of August 26, 2018. During this time these 4 days, the bridge will be temporarily shut to allow for the test to be carried before embarking on proper repairs at a later date.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Ade Akinsanya, said the decision was taken after due consultation with the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing.
The Federal Controller of Works, Lagos Engineer Adedamola Kuti, said that alternative routes would be plied during the period and traffic control would be in place to direct and help traffic movement. He said that this exercise was to avert what happened at Genoa, Italy where a bridge collapsed claiming so many lives.
Commenting on the closure, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Ladi Lawanson said that “the state government has taken some measures that required the support of citizens to achieve desired results in traffic management. Government has begun deployment of technology in the enforcement of traffic rules, while we are also intensifying efforts to change the bad attitudes of commercial motorcyclists and motorists through sensitization programmes. “The change of attitude will require much engagement with their unions. Enforcement and governance require a lot of engagement, it is not just telling somebody this is what I want you to do.”
