ITC partners with Microsoft to help SMEs in developing countries sell online
The International Trade Centre (ITC) and Microsoft Corporation have signed a letter of intent during the World Trade Organization Ministerial Conference to provide training for small businesses in developing countries. The training will cover topics such as artificial intelligence (AI) for trade, cybersecurity, and e-commerce to enhance their digital skills. This collaboration aims to bridge the gap between the digital trading landscape and the lack of knowledge and skills among small businesses. Through this partnership, ITC and Microsoft will promote inclusive digital trade practices and policies to help achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
In Nigeria, Microsoft will offer tailored capacity building under ITC’s Inclusive Digital Entrepreneurship in the Agri-food Sector (IDEAS) project, including courses on Microsoft 365 products and entrepreneurship. Microsoft will also provide training on AI for trade and cybersecurity skills, ensuring beneficiaries can apply these skills effectively. ITC will offer e-commerce content for Microsoft’s Digital Skills Nigeria Training Portal, enabling more businesses to acquire the latest e-commerce knowledge. This partnership is crucial for ITC’s mission to support small businesses, enhance their competitiveness, and promote digital inclusivity for sustainable economic growth in developing countries.
The collaboration with Microsoft will empower small businesses in developing countries with the necessary digital and entrepreneurial skills to excel in rapidly evolving global markets,’ Pamela Coke-Hamilton stated. ‘Digital transformation is a key factor in global trade – and now small businesses will have greater access to its benefits.’
Caroline Mutepfa, Philanthropies Lead at Microsoft, emphasized, ‘Numerous studies highlight the significant impact small businesses have on local communities and national economies. According to the World Economic Forum, small businesses represent 95% of all registered businesses and contribute 50% of GDP in sub-Saharan Africa. It is imperative that these businesses receive the support required to thrive in a digital economy. Our collaboration with the ITC is in line with Microsoft’s mission to empower individuals and organizations to achieve more. Through digital skills development, we aim to ensure no business is left behind.’
