Manchester City wins the UEFA Champions League: beating hard fighting Inter Milan 1-0
Manchester City Football Club acheived their dream for the 2023 football calendar by clinching the 2023 Champions League Trophy today in Istanbul’s Ataturk Olympic Stadium. The Pep Guardiola led team proved book makers right by beating the hard fighting Italian champions, Inter Milan FC, by a lone goal scored in the second half of play by Rodri.
Manchester City had earlier won the 2023 English Premiership League and the FA cup. The team put up a fine technical performance, though judged by most football pundits as being below their very best.
This is Manchester City’s first Championship league trophy and unfortunately, playmaker De Bruyne was replaced by England midfielder Phil Foden after being forced out in the 36th minute due to a leg injury. Speaking after the game he said, “It’s been a challenging two months. My hamstring snapped because of all the troubles I was having with it. “But we prevailed because the team was strong enough. It is remarkable how long we have labored for this. This year, we haven’t suffered a Champions League defeat. Even though it wasn’t the best game, now is the time to rejoice.”
The Premier League and FA Cup champions thus becomes the eighth club and just the second English team ever to achieve a historic treble, following neighborhood rivals Manchester United who did it in 1999.
Manchester City have achieved their goal of winning their first Champions League title with the triumph, ending what coach Pep Guardiola confessed was a “obsession” after so many close calls since their takeover by Abu Dhabi’s ruling family in 2008 made them the richest team in the world.
