Nigerians are getting more unhappy, ranks 102 in the World happiness Index
According to the 2024 World Happiness Report, Nigerians are getting less happier and more unhappy as the country ranks the 102nd happiest nation out of 143 countries. This is a decline by 7 positions from the previous year of 2023, where it was placed 95th in the world. The World Happiness Index is an annual publication that assesses the level of happiness and examines the disparities in happiness worldwide.
It is based on six key factors that contribute to happiness levels in a country, including GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom, generosity, and corruption. Finland retains its position as the happiest country globally, while Afghanistan is ranked as the least happy country. In comparison to other African nations, Nigeria holds the 8th spot in terms of happiness within the region, with Mauritius leading at the 1st position.
Analysis by age group reveals that young individuals in Nigeria (under 30 years old) are happier, ranking 108th, whereas the adult category places the country at 130th. Nigeria’s low ranking is indicative of its challenging economic and social circumstances, with GDP per capita at $2,162 and life expectancy at 52 years. Issues such as inadequate healthcare infrastructure, limited access to medical services, income inequality, and poverty contribute to the country’s weak economic situation.
It is imperative for the government to bolster social welfare initiatives and safety nets to assist vulnerable populations. Furthermore, there is a necessity for the government to advocate for good governance, transparency, and accountability to foster trust in institutions among citizens, ultimately leading to increased happiness among the populace.
