Onyeka Onyenu, The Elegant Stallion, is dead. She died on Tuesday at the age of 72 at the Reddington Hospital in Lagos. She is survived by two sons, Tijani Ogunlende and Abrahim Ogunlende.
According to reports, Onyeka Onwenu had slumped at the 80th birthday party of Stella Okoli, the CEO of Emzor Pharmaceuticals. She had entertained the guests with a couple of her songs, and ending with her hit song, “One Love Keeps Us Together”. After her performance, she sat down and a few moments later, colapsed.
Onyeka Onwenu, MFR, was a multi-talented individual from Nigeria, known for her roles as a singer/songwriter, actress, human rights and social activist, journalist, politician, and former judge on the X Factor series. Referred to as the “Elegant Stallion” for her profound influence on African culture and entertainment, Onwenu previously served as the chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture. Her remarkable career led to her appointment as the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development in 2013.
Onyeka Onwenu, Broadcaster, Singer, Actress and Politician originated from Arondizuogu, a prominent town in Ideato North, Imo State, southeastern Nigeria, but was brought up in Port Harcourt, the capital city of Rivers State, Nigeria. She was the youngest daughter of Nigerian educationist and politician D. K. Onwenu, who passed away when she was four years old in a car accident a week before his appointment as Minister for Education, leaving his widow, Hope, to raise five children alone after her husband’s family denied her access to his property.
Onyeka Onwenu held a BA in International Relations and Communication from Wellesley College, Massachusetts, and an MA in Media Studies from The New School for Social Research, New York. She served as a tour guide for the United Nations before coming back to Nigeria in 1980 to fulfill her mandatory one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), in Lagos, Nigeria.
