Celo and Mento Labs are committed to onboarding millions of users to Web3 in Africa by providing accessible financial tools through MiniPay within the Opera Mini browser.
The MiniPay wallet is designed to be user-friendly for individuals of all experience levels to access the benefits of decentralized finance. By offering a familiar Web2 experience, MiniPay simplifies the process of acquiring, sending, and receiving Mento cUSD stablecoins through mobile phone numbers, as stated by Charles Hamel, Product Director of MiniPay.
The joint statement from the three companies highlights MiniPay’s mission to leverage decentralized finance (DeFi) to offer accessible financial tools and onboard millions of users in Africa to Web3. With its stablecoin wallet integrated into the Opera Mini browser, MiniPay facilitates fast, easy, and cost-effective payments with sub-cent fees through the Celo network. Currently available in Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana, MiniPay plans to expand its services to South Africa and beyond.
The collaboration between MiniPay, Celo, and Mento Labs is based on a common goal of promoting financial inclusion and economic stability in Africa. By incorporating Mento decentralized cUSD stablecoins into the MiniPay platform, users can benefit from features such as reduced currency volatility and a secure store of value. This partnership is particularly significant in areas impacted by hyperinflation and economic instability, where stablecoins offer a decentralized and accessible alternative to traditional financial services.
Jason Rodrigues, Head of Founder Programs at the Celo Foundation, expressed enthusiasm for the joint effort to advance the shared mission of fostering prosperity for all through Opera MiniPay. This strategic alliance enables real-world users to access a range of inclusive financial tools in a seamless, efficient, and dependable manner.
