Postal activities in Nigeria fell by 17.05% in 2022
In 2022, N3.01 billion was the total amount of money made through postal activities; this is a 17.05% decrease from the N3.63 billion earned in 2021 and points to a reduction in the number of services offered.
This was disclosed in a recent postal services data report from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). EMS/Speed post accounted for 27.8% of the revenue in 2022 when it was broken down by product, followed by NIPOST Premises/Space and Business Venture Service, which each contributed 12.9% and 10.7% of the total. Recent years have seen a steady reduction in NIPOST’s revenue, which has dropped by 43.9% in just three years, from N5.37 billion in 2019 to N3.01 billion in 2022.
Numerous causes, including the rising usage of email message services and electronic documents, contribute to the revenue’s ongoing decline. Additionally, since more people and businesses rely on digital communication, digitalization and electronic communication have significantly decreased the volume of traditional postal mail.
Furthermore, given that they frequently provide quicker and more specialized services, which, in contrast to the operational inefficiencies in the national postal systems, can deter users, private courier services have increased their level of competitiveness. To increase postal revenue, the government must invest in cutting-edge technology and automation to modernize postal operations. This would boost productivity, reduce expenses, and raise the standard of the postal service as a whole.
