Strategic Action plan for Clean Cooking Expansion in Nigeria Underway
The Clean Cooking Unit within the Department of Climate Change in the Federal Ministry of Environment is engaging with stakeholders to develop a 5-year strategic plan for clean cooking expansion in Nigeria. The Unit, established in 2021, has a mission of facilitating the achievement of the clean cooking targets in the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC). The NDC has a clean cooking target of 48% LPG penetration and 13% improved cookstoves dissemination by 2030.
As part of the process towards developing this 2023 to 2027 strategic plan, the Department of Climate Change in collaboration with the International Centre for Energy, Environment and Development (ICEED), Heinrich Boell Foundation and the Nigerian Alliance for Clean Cooking convened members of the National Clean Cooking Committee on 28th July 2022 to review and validate the initial draft collaborative strategic action plan developed by the Clean Cooking Unit. The workshop was held at the ICEED Office Abuja.
The workshop was declared open by the Chairman of the Nigerian Alliance for Clean Cooking who is also the Director, Department of Climate Change in the Federal Ministry of Environment, Dr. Iniobong Abiola-Awe. In her opening remarks, Dr. Abiola-Awe thanked stakeholders present for honoring the invitation to support the Clean Cooking Unit in developing its strategic plan. She highlighted the crisis with inefficient cooking faced by a majority of Nigerian households and the opportunities that investments in clean cooking presents both in expanding access to energy as well as combating greenhouse gas emissions.
She commended the effort of stakeholders in supporting the Clean Cooking Unit to ensure Nigeria achieves universal clean cooking access. In her words, “the strategic action plan for the Clean Cooking Unit will not only provide a roadmap for expansion of clean cooking access in Nigeria, it will also contribute to the achievement of the Energy Transition Plan and Sustainable Development Goals”. She therefore urged stakeholders present to work together and ensure that great input is made into the draft and a robust strategic plan is developed.
During the workshop, stakeholders critically reviewed the detailed plans and proposed timelines. Stakeholders also came up with detailed activities to achieve the targets and relevant MDAs responsible for their achievement.
The Strategic Action Plan is expected to be finalized and domiciled within the Clean Cooking Unit by the end of August 2022. Once finalized, the Nigerian Alliance for Clean Cooking will mobilize stakeholders to support the Unit in its implementation.
