The Awujale of Ijebuland, HRM, Oba Sikiru Adetona, conferred with GCON second highest national award
President Bola Tinubu has awarded the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, with the prestigious Grand Commander of the Order of Niger (GCON) during the monarch’s 90th birthday celebration. The president praised Oba Adetona’s contributions to nation-building and service to humanity, particularly in the education sector.
The Oba Sikiru Adetona School of Governance Studies was inaugurated and a book on governance in Nigeria was presented. The school will be managed by the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies. Governor Dapo Abiodun described Oba Adetona as a living legend and an extraordinary leader.
The governor praised the monarch for preserving Ijebu heritage and establishing the Oba Sikiru Adetona Professorial Chair in Governance at OOU. The Pro-Chancellor highlighted the School of Governance’s goal of promoting discussions on governance and leadership. The Vice Chancellor thanked the Awujale for supporting the school and expressed a commitment to excellence.
Prof. Agagu discussed Nigeria’s challenges and the importance of a democratic political culture in addressing governance issues. Prof. Agagu emphasized the crucial need for individuals with a strong sense of public spirit across all sectors of society in order to steer the country in the right direction. He highlighted the importance of patriotism, genuine concern for the welfare of the people, visionary leadership, honesty, transparency, accountability, and impeccable character, drawing inspiration from the exemplary qualities of Oba Sikiru Adetona.
