#TokyoOlympics: 40 Countries get on the medals table on Day 2, Africa wins first gold medal via Tunisia
At the end of day 2 of the Tokyo Olympics on July 25, China remains top of the medals table with 6 gold, 1 silver and 4 bronze medals. The USA is on the third spot with 10 medals out of which 4 are gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze. Japan, the host Nation, is second with six gold medals and one silver, a total of 7 medals.
All in all, Team China has won more medals than any other country with 11 medals, USA follows with 10, ROC (Russian Federation) with 7 and Japan with 6. However, standings are ranked on the number of gold, silver and bronze in that order.
Tunisia is the only African country on the medals table. The country has won one gold and one silver, placing 10th on the medals table with a total of 2 medals at the close of day 2. Tunisia’s gold medal came from the Men’s 400m Freestyle swimming won by its Hafnaoui Ahmed while the silver medal was won in the Men -58kg Taekwondo by its Jendoubi Mohamed khalil.
The 18-year-old Tunisian Hafnaoui Ahmed won the Men’s 400m Freestyle swimming from the outside lane after qualifying slowest, but finished with stunning pace to beat Australia’s Jack McLoughlin with a time of three minutes 43.36 seconds.
“I just can’t believe it. It’s a dream and it became true. It was great, it was my best race ever,” said Hafnaoui. It was Tunisia’s fifth ever Olympic gold medal – and third in swimming.
At the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, Russia will not use their name, flag, or anthem. Instead, the country will compete under the name “ROC”, which is an acronym for the Russian Olympic Committee. This is due to the fact that Russia was sanctioned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after it was accused of running a state-backed doping program. So wherever you see ROC written, know it refers to Russia. Russia has won 7 medals made of 1 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze medals.
On the medals table at the end of day 2, South Korea is fourth, ROC is fifth, Italy is sixth, Australia is seventh, France is 8th, Hungary is 9th while Tunisia is placed 10th.
Britain has won one silver and one bronzes while Germany has won 2 bronze, India I silver and 1 bronze, Brazil 1 Silver and 1 bronzea bronze and Kosovo has one gold medal.
