#TokyoOlympics: Team Nigeria still missing on the medals table as Athletes loss to Opponents
Nigeria is still missing on the medals table of the ongoing Tokyo Olympic games. The Nigerian athletes appear to be having a tough time matching the skill and athletic level of their opponents as they are losing their games.
As at the close of the activities on Day 3, 51 countries including Tunisia, Egypt and Cote divoire from Africa have at least a bronze medal. But Nigeria is not on the medals horizon yet.
Nigeria which sent 60 athletes to the games is participating in 10 Olympics sports including track and field, basketball men, basketball women, swimming, boxing, taekwondo, football, rowing, table tennis, taekwondo, Badminton, Cano Sprint and artistic gymnastics.
Team Nigeria will be looking to add to the haul of 25 medals from 18 Olympics games participations so far. Since debuting at the games in 1952, Nigeria has only won three Gold, 10 Silver and 12 Bronze medals, a total of 25.
One of Nigeria medal hopefuls at the games, Veteran Nigeria tennis player Funke Oshonaike, was has been sent packing yesterday from the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in the preliminary round. Oshonaike lost to USA’s Juan Liu in the women’s Table Tennis Singles. She lost the first set by 11-7, the second 11-3, and the third 11-4.
Another Nigerian, Dorcas Adesokan, on Monday lost to Clara Azurmendi of Spain in the women’s singles event of the badminton competition. She lost 0-2 (10-21, 2-21). She is billed to face An Seyoung of South Korea on Tuesday evening to determine her progress in the competition.
Also, the pair of Olofua and Opeyori lost their opening group game on Saturday against Team Japan. They equally lost their second game today to the pair of Kim Astrup and Anders Rasmussen from Denmark.
Ndem Nffiong also lost in the Women’s single table tenis lay to USA Zhang Lily
In Taekwondo – ANYANACHO Elizabeth Oluchi lost to TATAR Nur of Turkey in the round of 16
