Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, named Time Magazine’s 2022 Person of the Year
The Ukranian President, Volodymyr Zelensky and “the spirit of Ukraine” has been named a Time Magazine’s 2022 Person of the Year.
According to former Managing Editor Walter Isaacson in the 1998 edition, the award is given to the person or persons who most touched the news and our lives, for good or bad, and symbolized what was vital about the year, for better or for worse. That suggests the individual is not necessarily a hero.
Thus, every year, TIME recognizes the individual (or individuals) with the greatest effect over the previous 12 months. The editors of TIME selected Elon Musk for 2021. Other notable nominees include Donald Trump in 2016, the Silence Breakers, who came out against sexual assault and harassment in 2017, and Greta Thunberg, a climate activist and the youngest person ever elected Person of the Year.
Iranian demonstrators, China’s president Xi Jinping, and the US Supreme Court were among the other candidates considered for the 2022 award. The editor of the magazine referred to the choice of Zelensky as “the most clear-cut in recollection. There was a coming together around this cause, around this country, in a world that had come to be defined by its divisiveness, Edward Felsenthal wrote.
The spirit of Ukraine included those Ukrainians who fought behind the scenes and lived all over the world. This includes individuals like Yuliia Payevska, a doctor who was kidnapped and held captive by Russia for three months, and Ievgen Klopotenko, a cook who fed hundreds of Ukrainians at no cost.
The K-pop group Blackpink was named Time’s Entertainer of the Year for 2022, and women in Iran were named the magazine’s 2022 Heroes of the Year.
American baseball player Aaron Judge has been named the year’s top athlete, and Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh has been named the year’s top icon.
The winner from the previous year, Elon Musk, was once again selected as a finalist. His electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla rose to the position of most valuable automaker in the world in 2021.
