Afro Nation Portugal 2023 alters the game once more with global talents from all over the world joining the movement after earning a reputation for hosting the hottest performers and upcoming stars while showcasing sounds from every corner of the African continent. It brings together cultures from Africa, Europe, the US, Latin America, and the Caribbean for a celebration of music, dance, and more in one genuinely unforgettable party.
This year’s biggest breakthrough, Asake, brings his vibrant brand of Lagos street pop to Portimo, hot on the heels of Fireboy DML, who has had an extraordinary run of chart success with his smash hit “Peru” and a subsequent remix collaboration with Ed Sheeran. Asake starts with so much new Nigerian talent. With her Afrosoul style and seductive voice, which can frequently be heard on tracks with Wizkid the star boy himself, Ayra Starr’s burgeoning fame cannot be ignored. This June, when she makes her Afro Nation debut, she’ll create a memorable moment.
Aya Nakamura, a superstar of afro pop from France and Mali, will make another historic premiere. She has worked with the acclaimed South London rapper Ms Banks, who herself joins the bill today, along with fellow South London riser Gabzy, pls BNXN FKA BUJU, Tyla, and more. She is best known for her catalog of hits like Djadja, Pookie, and Jolie Nana, as well as a number of high profile collaborations with artists like Stormzy and Major Lazer.
The Compozers will be back in 2023 to show us how it’s done, while Kenyan quartet Sauti Sol will bring over 20 years of Afro-pop credentials to the beach this summer, demonstrating a healthy balance of iconic bands performing alongside this year’s most exciting newcomers.
Without its groundbreaking Piano People stage, which hosts the hottest and most influential musicians from the South African Amapiano scene, no Afro Nation celebration would be complete. The ultimate Amapiano supergroup Scorpion Kings, the well-known twins Major League DJz, the internet sensation Uncle Waffles, Musa Keys, Young Stunna, Daliwonga, DBN GoGo, Vigro Deep, Moonchild Sanelly, Tyler ICU, and many more are all part of this year’s Afro Nation Portugal lineup. With all these DJs pumping it up, the Piano People celebration this year will be unforgettable!
News of the premier Portugal gig comes after the second Afro Nation Ghana in 2022, when Meek Mill capped his historic trip to Accra with a much anticipated headline performance at the festival in late December. The thrilling return of Afro Nation to West Africa brought together thousands of fans from across the world and inaugurated a forward-thinking new age of music and arts festivals in the area. Black Sherif, who dominated the concert with his interpretation of Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song,” Gyakie, Camidoh, and many other amazing Ghanaian performers now have the chance to perform at Afro Nation Portugal 2023.
Afro Nation’s first US performance has also been made public. The big lineup for Afro Nation Miami, which takes place on May 27 and 28, includes Burna Boy, Wizkid, Rema, Asake, Beanie Man, and many others. The Afro Nation movement keeps expanding and changing every year as a result of the inexorable ascent of Afrobeats, and more events keep people dancing all year long!
