The African Union Media Fellowship Programme for 2023-2024 invites African media practitioners who are passionate about promoting development-focused stories through various media forms leveraging emerging technology.

To ensure that Africa is at the forefront of defining and telling its own story to African and global audiences, the African Union (AU) launched the AU Media Fellowship as a transformative platform to shape the African story and create a more accurate representation of Africa’s progress and opportunities through the use of emerging digital technologies as a key tool for communication and engagement that will enable the continent to achieve the vision and aspirations of Africa’s Agenda 2063.

Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) funds the AU Media Fellowship programme.

Skill Development Goals of the AU Media Fellowship Programme
Through training, mentorship, and hands-on experiences, the AU Media Fellowship (AUMF) provides a structured environment for enhancing skills and knowledge in analysis, content creation, and storytelling, allowing participants to sharpen their journalistic storytelling abilities, learn new techniques, and gain expertise in utilizing emerging technologies and digital media platforms.

Collaboration and networking
The AU Media Fellowship (AUMF) provides a venue for like-minded industry professionals and experts, content creators, government, policymakers, and key industry actors to interact and collaborate.

Resources Are Available
The AU Media Fellowship (AUMF) gives participants access to technical resources, tools, and equipment, including as funds, cutting-edge technology, research materials, and platforms for publishing or transmitting work created during the program.

Important Activities

The Fellowship is a 12-month program that will begin in August 2023.

August – December 2023: After final selection and acceptance into the program, Fellows will participate in virtual induction sessions, on-boarding training, and the first study tour. Fellows are required to concentrate on their pitch narrative during this time, as well as participate in mandatory online certified trainings (Self-selection) and master seminars from industry professionals.

January – March 2024: Fellows will engage in the second study tour, as well as in-person training and one-on-one mentorship, as well as mandatory online certification training (Self-selection) and master seminars from industry leaders. Fellows will also be invited to the Annual African Union Summit in February 2024, where they will have special access to senior African leadership and invited international guests.

April to June 2024: Fellows will embark on their final study tour while continuing to benefit from training and best practice sessions. Fellows will deliver their last tales, get awards, and take part in closing ceremonies / sessions in July 2024.
