Every minute, 20 individuals are forced to flee their homes to avoid conflict, persecution, or terror. The Social Shifters and Amazon Global Refugee Challenge aims to enable young people aged 18 to 30 to investigate, originate, and extend ideas to help address the world’s severe refugee situation.
A Developing Crisis:
According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the globe had 82.4 million forcibly displaced individuals at the end of 2020, with more than a quarter of them being refugees. Due to conflicts, natural catastrophes, persecution, and human rights violations, an estimated 89 million people worldwide were forced to evacuate their homes in 2021. As new refugee crises occur and existing ones persist or worsen, action is required immediately.
