How Many Households in Nigeria are engaged in Agricultural Activities?
Based on the NBS National Agricultural Sample Census report, approximately 40.2 million agricultural families in Nigeria are engaged in various agricultural activities.
The agricultural activities survey reveals that 91% of agricultural households are involved in crop cultivation, with 35% focusing exclusively on crop cultivation and 48% raising livestock. Additionally, in 2022, 16% of families raised cattle, 41.2% raised goats, 42.5% raised fowl, and only 5% were involved in fishing.
These statistics highlight the prevalence of agricultural activities among Nigerian households and the diversity of their involvement in the agricultural sector. However, it is crucial to empower these households to fully realize their potential and enhance their contribution to the economy.
Government policies should prioritize increasing crop yields, providing resources for animal production, and enhancing support for underserved industries such as fisheries and for the various agricultural activities. These measures would not only improve the overall rural livelihoods but also bolster Nigeria’s ability to address the country’s current severe food crisis.
