“Iwájú,” animated film series streams exclusively on Disney+ beginning Feb. 28, 2024
The highly anticipated animated series “Iwájú” will be available for streaming exclusively on Disney+ starting from February 28, 2024. This groundbreaking collaboration between Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pan-African entertainment company Kugali brings forth a six-part series that takes place in a futuristic Lagos, Nigeria.
The story revolves around Tola, a young girl from a privileged background, and her best friend Kole, a self-taught tech expert. Together, they embark on a thrilling coming-of-age adventure, uncovering hidden secrets and facing dangers in their contrasting worlds. With the creative expertise of Kugali filmmakers and the visionary artists at Disney Animation, “Iwájú” promises to transport viewers into a world filled with captivating visuals and technological advancements inspired by the vibrant spirit of Lagos.
The series is produced by Christina Chen from Disney Animation, with a screenplay by Olufikayo Ziki Adeola and Halima Hudson. Notable voice talents include Simisola Gbadamosi, Dayo Okeniyi, Femi Branch, Siji Soetan, and Weruche Opia. Director Olufikayo Ziki Adeola expressed his excitement for the project, describing the process of crafting the narrative as a journey of creative alchemy. Additionally, on February 28th, Disney+ will also premiere “Iwájú: A Day Ahead,” a documentary special that was filmed on three different continents. This documentary tells the inspiring story of the founders of Kugali, a Pan-African entertainment company, who turned their dream into reality by collaborating with Walt Disney Animation Studios to create an original animation series. Produced by the team behind “Into the Unknown: Making Frozen 2” from ABC News Studios and Walt Disney Animation Studios, this documentary showcases the limitless possibilities that arise when talent and opportunity intersect. Directed by Megan Harding and executive produced by Amy Astley and Beth Hoppe, “Iwájú: A Day Ahead” is a must-watch for anyone seeking inspiration.
