Launch of the 2022 ‘Africa’s Urbanisation Dynamics: The Economic Power of Africa’s Cities’ report
The Sahel and West Africa Club (SWAC/OECD), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the African Development Bank (AfDB) will jointly hold a virtual launch of the 2022 edition of Africa’s Urbanisation Dynamics: The Economic Power of Africa’s Cities report.
The report provides a broad and current perspective on Africa’s urban economies. Based on data from more than four million individuals and firms in 2,600 cities across 34 countries, it presents compelling evidence that urbanisation contributes to better economic outcomes and higher living standards for Africans.
Urbanisation accounts for approximately 30 per cent of per capita gross domestic product (GDP) growth across Africa. Additionally, gains in economic performance and quality of life from urbanisation frequently extend to smaller towns and rural areas in the vicinity of cities.
During the launch, the report’s authors will present their key findings and discuss policy implications for national and local governments.
Participants will include Mr. Ibrahim Assane Mayaki, CEO of AUDA-NEPAD and honorary president of the Sahel and West Africa Club, Mr. Solomon Quaynor, Vice-President, Private Sector, Infrastructure and Industrialization, African Development Bank, and Ms. Edlam Abera Yemeru, acting Director, Gender, Poverty and Social Policy Division, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.
The session will be held in English, with French interpretation available.
