Launching the 2019 Africa Energy Indaba theme: Africa’s Energy Future

DIGITALISATION AND INNOVATION AS PART
OF THE ENERGY SOLUTION IN AFRICA
Energy is a key driver of economic growth and development, and the provision of access to modern energy contributes tremendously to improved health care, better education and economic opportunities in urban and rural areas in Africa.
Energy systems are experiencing rapid change at local, national and global levels driven by a blend of innovation; changes in policy and consumer demands; and the reducing costs of new technology. Renewables, distributed energy and smart grids demand new capabilities, new business models and regulatory frameworks.
The discussions unpacked the role of digitalisation in creating modern and affordable energy sources without impeding development; and to take climate change into account when considering the growth and development in Africa.

DIGITALISATION & THE IMPACT ON THE AFRICAN ENERGY SECTOR

The utility of the future will have to be fully digitised. Utilities are facing a digital transformation which can be beneficial in terms of improved operations and asset management
Digital management of distributed energy sources has already begun and brings opportunities and a market, especially for the Private sector
An energy revolution through decentralisation is occurring (off-grid and
micro-grids)
ENERGY ACCESS: Digitalisation means greater access to services by a wider
community, in focused and more efficient ways that were previously impossible
