Modupe Adedokun sworn in as Chairperson of Society of Women Accountants of Nigeria (SWAN) Ota Chapter
The Society of Women Accountants of Nigeria (SWAN) today inducted Mrs. Modupe Olaitan Adedokun, lead partner at Modupe Adedokun and Co. (AMCO), as the Chairperson of SWAN, Ota Chapter.
The Society of Women Accountants of Nigeria (SWAN) is the organization for all female members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and was established in 1978. It was founded with the primary intention of uniting qualified female members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), as well as to support the institute in developing and upholding high standards of effectiveness and professional behavior. In order to help its members reach their professional and personal objectives, SWAN offers a welcoming environment, opportunities, and useful tools to female accountants. These opportunities include leadership, networking, education, and empowerment. SWAN has more than 11,000 members as of January 2023 in 24 different chapters spread across the country.
Mrs. Adedokun who is a seasoned accountant and fellow of ICAN, cut her teeth as an accountant with the firm of BDO, where she worked for nine years before setting up her own accounting firm, Modupe Adedokun & Co. (AMCO) with focus on auditing, tax, and financial reporting.
She had served as the vice chairperson of SWAN Ota District, Chairperson of the Investiture and Inauguration Committee of SWAN Ota Chapter, Member of the Investiture Committee of ICAN Ota District Society (ODS), member of the welfare committee of ODS ICAN Ota District and as Secretary Treasurer and Vice President of BNI Alpha Chapter, Chairperson, Membership Committee of BNI Alpha Chapter and member of the visitor host team of BNI Sapphire chapter.
Mrs. Modupe Adedokun gives back to society through her NGO – AG Frontliners Mission Support Initiative – which she co-founded with her husband, Mr. Olugbenga Adedokun. She holds an HND in Accountancy from the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, a B.Sc. in Accounting from the University of Lagos and an MBA from LAUTECH. She became an ICAN member in 2007 and in 2017 was inducted as an ICAN Fellow
Dignitaries that graced the occasion include Mrs. Nwamara Catherine Nnaji, FCA, National Chairperson and Head of SWAN Executive Council; Mrs. Abiodun Yetunde Tosin, FCA, Pioneer Chairperson of SWAN Ota Chapter; Mrs. Olabisi Enitan Taiwo, FCA, the 11th Chairperson of ICAN Ota and District Society; Yeye Gbemisola Soyemi Beecroft, FCA, Patron SWAN, Ota Chapter; Reverend Dr. Oladokun, FCA; Engr. Kola Alabi; Mrs. Yetunde Abiodun, FCA; Mr. Abayomi Oke, FCA; Mr. David Ikwuele, FCA; and Chief Mrs. Hilda Ozoh, FCA.
Others at the investiture ceremony include Mrs. Mojisola Areola, Member of BNI Alpha Chapter; Mrs. Taiwo Odewenwa, ACA, former President of BNI Alpha Chapter and CEO, Seed Royal Travels; and Mr. Chimaobi Agwu, National Director of BNI Nigeria.
In her valedictory speech, the outgoing chairperson of SWAN Ota Chapter, Mrs. Abiodun Yetunde Tosin, FCA, thanked the outgoing team for their achievements during the past year, including the production of the SWAN Ota newsletter, the Empress, and the support and succor given to girl children, students, and the disadvantaged in society. She congratulated the incoming team and chairperson, pledging her continued support and contributions.
Mrs. Nwamara Nnaji, the National Chairperson and Head of SWAN Executive Council, charged the incoming SWAN Ota Chairperson and her team to build on the foundation laid by the outgoing team and ensure that the tempo is kept higher and stronger. She further urged them to influence every member to pursue the common goal and for the SWAN flag to keep flying higher.
SWAN, she said, has in the past 44 years recruited thousands of women into the accounting profession, awarded numerous scholarships, and provided succor to the sick, motherless babies, students, and girl children. She commended the commitment of SWAN Ota members for making the group succeed and for executing valuable projects to make SWAN Ota one of the most viable in the country with an emphasis on integrity, accountability, and accuracy. She charged SWAN Ota to keep the focus on enhancing the status of women in society and the administrative capacity of SWAN, urging the members to continue to be resilient as SWAN is not for monetary reward but a sacrifice to humanity.
Congratulating the incoming team and the Chairperson as they take on the mantle of leadership, Mrs. Nnaji charged them to take their assignment with more vigor and take SWAN to greater heights.
After she was sworn by by the chairperson of ICAN Ota district society, Mrs. Nwamara Nnaji, the new SWAN Ota chairperson proceeded to perform her first official role by swearing in members of her executive team
Responding, the new chairperson of SWAN Ota Chapter, Mrs. Modupe Adedokun, FCA, thanked the immediate past chairperson and team for the tenacious efforts they made in taking SWAN Ota to greater heights. Referring to SWAN as the mitochondrion arm of ICAN, the newly inducted chairperson stated that SWAN Ota will pursue the goals of female child enlightenment, medical outreach, school visitation program, regular SWAN business breakfasts, SWAN accounting clinics, visits to motherless babies’ homes and orphanages, and the expansion of the SWAN membership base to uplift society and SWAN members.
She continued, “The new SWAN Ota Chapter team will hold regular retreats for its members, conduct women empowerment programs, and make courtesy calls on members, corporate organizations, and VIPs.”
Mrs. Adedokun pledged to be open, transparent, and accountable as SWAN Chairperson and to emerge at the end of her tenure with heads held high, having delivered on her mandate and having served to the best of her abilities.
