South Africa wins Africa’s first Gold Medal in Paris Olympics 2024
Tatjana Smith of South Africa achieved remarkable success at the Paris Olympics 2024 by securing the gold medal in the women’s 100m breaststroke, marking Africa’s and South Africa’s first gold medal at the Mundial. She completed the race with a time of 1:05.28 and was overcome with emotion as she celebrated her triumph.
Following the race, she expressed her belief that her fellow countrymen would be immensely proud of her accomplishment. “I think they would have been proud even if I did not win a medal. That’s what I am really grateful for, really just the people in my life, they have been so supportive. It’s the small things that make us and drive us as athletes,” she remarked.
With this victory, South Africa has now won a total of three medals at the Paris Olympics 2024, comprising of one gold and two bronze medals. Other African Nations that have achieved medal success include Tunisia, which has secured one silver medal, and Egypt, which has won one bronze medal. Nigeria has yet to claim a medal in the Paris Olympics 2024 Games.
To date, as at the end of sporting activities on day 5 of the Paris Olympics 2024 Games, 47 out of the 206 National Olympic Committees (Countries) have won medals, with China leading the medal tally, having garnered nine gold, seven silver, and three bronze medals (for a total medal haul of 19 so far). The United States currently ranks seventh, with five gold, thirteen silver, and twelve bronze medals, making a total of 30 medals. On the other hand, the host, France, is second on the medals table with 8 gold, 10 silver and 8 bronze medals, making a total of 26 medals so far.
