Teranga Lions of Senegal devour the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon 3:1 at AFCON2023

The indomitable lions of Cameroon could not roar today at their second group C game in the ongoing AFCON2023 competition in Senegal. They were outplayed by the Teranga Lions of Senegal who showed no mercy in devouring them 3:1 at the Stade Charles Konan Banny. Ismaila Sarr opened the scoring in the 16th minute of play, while Habibuo Mouhammadou Diallo netted the second goal in the 71st minute. Cameroon got a goal back in the 83rd minute of play through Jean-Charles Castelletto. But then, the Senegal captain, Sadio Mane, sealed the game for his side with a third goal in the 95th minute.

Sarr displayed his brilliance by scoring a fantastic goal and constantly posing a threat on the wing. His speed and skill caused problems for Cameroon throughout the match. He even provided a superb assist for Diallo’s goal with a well-executed cut-back. Sarr’s performance was so impressive that Cameroon had to resort to fouling him to try and stop him. The former Watford winger was truly exceptional for Senegal.

When analyzing the game, it is difficult to overlook Onana’s performance. Although he was caught off guard by the deflection following Sarr’s shot, his weak punch allowed Senegal to create a scoring opportunity. He was also unable to prevent Senegal’s second goal. If he had properly claimed the ball before Sarr’s goal, the outcome of the match could have been different. Additionally, it is worth considering that he might have saved Mane’s shot for the goal if he had reacted more athletically.

The first half lacked quality, with both teams struggling to create clear-cut opportunities. Cameroon must win their last group game against Gambia if they are to have any chance of progressing in the competition and hope that Gambia spoils the party for Guinea in their game later today. With this result, Senegal joins Cape Verde in qualifying for the knockout stages with 6 points cool in the kitty.
