Unity Bank MD calls For Policy Measures to Stop Gender-Based Violence in Nigeria

Mrs. Tomi Somefun, the Managing Director of Unity Bank Plc, has advocated for comprehensive policy measures aimed at dismantling the systems that condone gender-based violence in Nigeria.

Unity Bank sponsored the BECKMA movie premiere by ARDA Development Communications Inc. at the Ebony Life Cinema, the location of the film screening in Lagos. The purpose of the event was to raise awareness of gender-based violence and to promote constructive social change.

Somefun cited a recent UNDP survey conducted in Nigeria and stated that, “9% of women aged 15 to 49 had suffered sexual assault at least once in their lifetime and 31% had experienced physical violence,” on behalf of Unity Bank’s Group Head of Compliance, Mrs. Patricia Ahunanya.

Somefun went on to say, “Gender-based violence is a societal ill that requires our collective attention. It is not just a women’s issue.” It is past time for us to take the initiative and push for broad legislative measures that would topple the systems that enable such crimes to continue.

“I implore legislators to implement strict legislation prohibiting gender-based violence, guaranteeing prompt and severe penalties for those who commit it,” she continued. We also need to be change agents in our homes and at various organizations, encouraging others to do the same.

As she praised ARDA Development Communications Inc. for their efforts to advance gender equality and empowerment in accordance with SDG5, Somefun gave assurances regarding the Bank’s dedication to long-term projects, additional cooperative initiatives, and advocacy campaigns aimed at ending gender-based violence.
