Argentina beat the Netherlands on penalties and cruise to 2022 World Cup semi final in Qatar
Argentina beat Netherlands 4:3 on penalty kicks to progress to the semi finals of the 2022 World cup in Qatar (Aggregate score 6:5). The Netherlands missed lost two penalty kicks while Argentina lost one. At full time the scores was 2:2. Argentina was two goals up to the 65th minute then they let their guards down allowing the hard fighting and relentless Dutch players to equalize in the last minute of the 90 minutes extra time.
There were practically seconds remaining when the Netherlands earned a free kick on the edge of Argentina’s box, and almost everyone anticipated a chance on goal.
Cody Gakpo and Teun Koopmeiners were both positioned over the ball, with the former preparing to shoot. However, Wout Weghorst held off a defender to push the ball home after Koopmeiners slipped a ball into him rather than launching an effort over the wall.
Everyone was taken aback by the amazing play sequence, including some of their own colleagues. In soccer, let alone during a quarterfinal World Cup, such experimentation is rarely profitable.
Wout Weghorst tied the game for the Netherlands with a free kick just outside the penalty box in a spectacular end to extra time. They went into additional 30 minutes of extra time and to penalties and Argentina were more clinical netting four of their penalty kicks as against Netherlands three. Argentina will now face Croatia in the semi finals.
