Average Cost of a Healthy Diet Food – Inflation in Nigeria – now N1,041
According to the latest report from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the average cost of a healthy diet (CoHD) for May 2024 has reached N1,041 per day, marking a 0.6% increase from N1,035 in the previous month making eating and food becomes more luxury for Nigerians due to the rising food inflation in Nigeria
The average cost of a healthy diet CoHD (food inflation in Nigeria) represents the most affordable combination of locally available food items that align with global dietary and nutritional guidelines, indicating that the average Nigerian spends N1,041 daily to uphold a well-rounded diet.
On a regional level, the South-East region recorded the highest (food inflation in Nigeria) cost per adult per day at N1,189, in contrast to N919 in the North-West region. At the state level, Ebonyi, Abia, and Anambra reported the highest expenditures (N1,225, N1,215, and N1,205, respectively), while Yobe, Jigawa, and Kano had the lowest costs (N907, N899, and N898).
These discrepancies underscore the variations in agricultural productivity, product availability, and market prices among states. The CoHD has been steadily increasing in tandem with overall and food inflation, with starchy staples, legumes, nuts, and seeds being the primary drivers of this escalation.
To address the rising trend in average cost of a health diet CoHD (food inflation in Nigeria), the government should enhance investments in agriculture through farmer support programs. These interventions are anticipated to enhance local food production, subsequently lowering food prices and enhancing households’ access to nutritious food. SOURCE: CSEA AFRICA
