Manchester City Wins the 2024 Community Shield: Beat United 7:6 on penalties
Manchester City Football club today beat their rivals, Manchester United by 7:6 on penalty kicks to lift the 2024 Community shield. Both teams had played a 1:1 draw at the end of 90 minutes of play plus five minutes extra time. Both goals were scored in the dying minutes of the second half of play.
Erling Haarland, the Manchester City star man, was completely missing in the entire game, though he played the full ninety minutes, he never made any meaningful impact. But City’s youngster, Oscar Bobb, showed he has a lot of quality to offer to City. He made a lot of brilliant moves only the finishing robbed him of the back of the net.
Manchester United scored the opening through Alejandro Garnarcho in the 82nd minute of play while Manchester City equalized through Bernardo Silva in the 89th minute of play.
Manchester United missed two of their penalty kicks while Manchester City missed a penalty kick during the 2024 Community Shield penalty shoot out. During the run of play, both teams missed a lot of scoring chances with Manchester United missing more of the scoring chances, about four good scoring chances to have sealed the game in regulation time. Marcus Rashord played a disappointing game as had two clear scoring chances, two one on ones with the goal keeper, but in his characteristic manner and lack of football scoring strategic, played the balls wide, callously, off the goal posts on both occasions
The Manchester City line up at the 2024 Community Shield game looked rusty as Erling Haarland kept running all over the pitch and never holding the ball nor making any effective attack. Pep Guardiola brought in a lot of new players with the trusted players rested. It was only in the closing minutes of the second half that he brought in Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silver and Ake. These changes made immediate impact as Bernardo Silver equalized for City but failed to score his penalty kick. It would be recalled that Bernardo Silva equally missed his penalty kick during the Champions league against Real Madrid at the Etihad Stadium, and that miss led to Manchester City exiting the Champions league and bowing to defeat on penalty kicks to Real Madrid
In the end, Manchester United’s tactics at the Community Shield game paid off as they used the same game plan they used in beating City at the FA Cup final in May. Only this time, luck was against them. Manchester City have a lot of work to do to maintain their lead in the league this season, if their play in the community shield is any thing to go by
Praises must go to Pep Guardiola for the last minute changes he made. Those changes brought hope to the City team and proved pivotal in the resulting penalty shoot out
