Mo Salah scores injury-time penalty to secure a draw for Egypt against Mozambique in AFCON

Mo Salah had to score a late penalty kick to earn a draw for Egypt in their opening group match against Mozambique in the ongoing AFCON competition in Cote D’ivoire. Egypt got off to a flying start, opening the scoring within just two minutes with a powerful shot into the bottom corner by Mostafa Mohamed. Trezeguet came close to adding a second goal shortly after, but his fierce low drive struck the base of the post, denying Egypt the opportunity to extend their lead.

However, Mozambique had other plans and leveled the game early in the second half, scoring their first goal at the AFCON in 14 years. Witi stunned Egypt with a superb header, leaving the crowd in awe. To make matters worse for Egypt, just a minute later, Clesio Bauque added a second goal for Mozambique, completely turning the game on its head. He skillfully evaded a last-ditch slide tackle and calmly finished into the corner.

With only eight minutes left on the clock, the ball fell to Salah in the area, but his volley missed the target by a wide margin. It was a disappointing finish, more suited for a defender than a prolific scorer like Salah.

In a dramatic turn of events, Egypt were given a lifeline in injury time when a penalty was awarded after Mohamed was brought down in the area. After a lengthy VAR check, Salah stepped up and successfully converted the penalty, saving Egypt from a potential defeat. However, despite the late equalizer, the final result couldn’t hide the fact that both Salah and the national team had a subpar performance.
