Expert speakers, comments and mentoring from seasoned journalists, and networking events with specialists from prominent AI organizations are all part of the program. We anticipate fellows to apply their impact-focused perspective to major newsrooms and publications around the world after graduation.

The Tarbell Fellowship 2024 will run from January through December of 2024.

Benefits

Fellows are placed in a major newsroom covering artificial intelligence for 9-12 months. The specifics of placement differ depending on the outlet.
Stipend. Fellows earn stipends of up to $50,000 for the duration of their placement, depending on conditions. The Tarbell Fellowship anticipates stipends ranging from $35,000 to $50,000, depending on region and personal circumstances.

AI training that is intense. Fellows must complete a two-month program on AI technical and governance basics before being placed. This program is remote and takes 10 hours per week. Guest lectures, paired assignments, and readings are all part of the sessions.

The Oxford Summit. At the start of the fellowship, fellows attend a two-week summit in Oxford. This will be a busy fortnight in Oxford and London, with guest speakers, seminars, and networking events. Travel and lodging expenses will be completely reimbursed.

How does it work?
Challenging. Fellows will spend the year developing skills and a strong portfolio in order to advance their careers in journalism.

Fellows must work hard to earn expertise because the fellowship is not affiliated with a single news outlet. Stipends can be used to fund freelance work, placements in big newsrooms, or the creation of other types of media.

Full-time. The fellowship requires full-time dedication. Journalism is a highly competitive field, and we expect fellows to be entirely dedicated to their success.

Remote. The camaraderie is completely distant. This allows us to help emerging journalists from throughout the world.
